Sharing Our Spirit with the World
Colts Send $6000 for Haiti Relief
On January 12 this year, a huge earthquake struck Haiti, causing terrible damage and directly affecting the lives of nearly everyone in the country. Here at Congressional, along with the rest of the world, we were moved to act. Ms. Ulsh’s second grade class decided to help by collecting “Change for Change.” They figured that if everyone gave a little, we could do a lot to help the people of Haiti.
Another project called Haiti Houses was sponsored by Ms. Philip, Lower School art teacher. Students in all grades created pins which were sold for $5 each or whatever amount the purchaser wanted to donate. With support from the Leadership Club, parents and staff, and all the kids in the school, we were able to produce over 600 pins.
This project gave students at Congressional the chance to do something at a personal level that could make a real difference. Along with the $695 in change collected, we raised a total of $2936. We were able to obtain a dollar for dollar matching grant from a foundation through a parent’s business connection. That means that our gift will bring nearly $6000 dollars worth of much-needed aid to Haiti.
This aid will go toward health and sanitation, water and food, and temporary shelters. It will also help Haitian kids go back to school as soon as they can. We want to give a Congressional Colt Thank You to everyone who participated in Change for Change and Haiti Houses. Working together, our students truly demonstrated that we can Share Our Spirit with the world!
