Community
Community service is a Congressional tradition.
We educate the whole child, and that means teaching beyond academics to enable students to become productive members of society. Community service through Congressional helps your child:
- build self-esteem
- develop leadership skills and responsibility
- enhance his or her understanding of special needs populations
- demonstrate commitment to civic participation
Our community service program encourages both school-wide and individual class activities throughout the year. From preschool through eighth grade, students learn they can make a difference in someone else's life. The willingness to help others becomes a natural, enduring attribute of our students and develops adults in which we can all take pride.
Congressional has recently added a new dimension to its outreach efforts – family volunteerism. In the coming year, school families will work with Glories Happy Hats to make silly hats to aid in the healing of sick children at Innova Fairfax Hospital and will work with the Northern Virginia Literacy Council to promote the importance of reading. Side by side, parents and their children will offer their hearts and hands to help others in Northern Virginia.

What students say about their community service:
"Our visit made a difference to the residents."
"We can make contact with people in difficult situations."
"It makes me happy to let them know we care and to help with a tough time."
"I feel good about helping the community."
