We are excited about our full-day Specialty Camps for 2008!  From cooking to clay, you will be led in our specialty camps by an enthusiastic staff ready for summer fun.  All specialty camps are coed.

Campers will remain with their specific specialty groups throughout the entire day.  They will have access to the pool, and lunches and snacks will be provided.

Rising fourth to sixth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 1         June 16 to June 20

Campers will use their imagination, a digital camera, and Adobe Photoshop Elements to go wild with digital art on the Congo campus.  We will start with basic editing, color manipulations and working with layers in Photoshop.  We will then combine several techniques, add in filter effects, and page composition to create digital montage or scrapbook pages.

Terrific Textiles

Experiment with string! Tie-dye a shirt, weave a tapestry, and sew a bag. There is so much to try in the world of textiles: sewing, weaving, knitting, dyes, batik, baskets, and macrame. Come experience the fun of fibers. 

Digital Photo on the Road

Session 2         June 23 to July 3*

Digital photography is fun, fast and has endless possibilities so come join our journey.  We will begin by exploring the campus to study the basic photography techniques, tricks and tips that improve the quality of our photos, and then the real fun begins. After our intro, we will take our show on the road to local sights such as the National Mall, Old Town Alexandria, Georgetown, Arlington Cemetery, and the National Zoo.  These journeys along with a few tips and tricks in the "digital darkroom"  of Adobe Photoshop leave you with solid working knowledge and an impressive portfolio of imagery for years of enjoyment!

  • If you would like to use your own digital camera, it should be a minimum of 3 mega pixels, and a have a minimum 256 MB memory card.
  • On days of travel off campus, lunch will be purchased for campers at/near location. 

Hands-On Science

Session 2         June 23 to July 3*

Love to explore? Want to get your hands messy? Join us for exciting, hands-on science activities! Come with us to explore, create and discover some of the many wonders of science! You will take part in an array of activities including a germination analysis lab, the creation of a working lung and exploring some of the greatest unanswered questions in science. Our campus is booming with exciting science projects just waiting to be discovered. We will explore our creek habitat and the surrounding animal and plant life as well. The sky is the limit!

Young Engineers

Rising fourth to sixth graders in the fall of 2008

Session 3          July 7 to July 18
Session 4          July 21 to August 1

Young Engineers will spend their days focusing on interesting and educational projects. You will have the chance to build an erector set roller coaster, carnival rides, experiment with building blocks and work on other exciting projects. At the end of the session, you will build and race your own radio controlled race car in the second annual Congressional Camp 500!

Clay Exploration

Rising first to fourth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 4          July 21 to August 1

Come jump in the “mud” at Congressional Camp!  Two weeks of clay, hand-building and pottery.  Turn slabs to sculptures, coils to cups and lumps into lovelies.   Explore surface decoration with carving, glazing and more.  Come take the pottery wheel for a spin and join in on a “cool” clay class. 

Congo Lab

Session 4         July 21 to August 1

Don’t miss the chance to become a data detective!  Congo Lab is an investigative science camp that explores general science topics and utilizes Congressional’s campus to collect data and test daily projects.  You will discuss states of matter, density, water, crystals, gas expansion, weather, botany, ground water, habitats and the Chesapeake Watershed. Each day, you will bring home a new project related to the day’s theme and discussions. You are encouraged to bring your own ideas and curiosity to the lab!

3D Animal Art

Rising first to third graders in the fall of 2008
Session 5         August 4 to August 15

Join the stampede to create your own mini-zoo of scupltures. Make animals small and large with various media: clay, papier-mache, fabric, found objects and more. Form, carve sew, stuff and build a herd of animal pals. Moove quickly to experience all the furry, fuzzy, slimy fun!

Movie Making

Session 5         August 4 to August 15

Lights, camera, action! Aspiring actors and movie makers will have a blast at this year’s movie making camp!  Learn the fundamentals of movie making, lighting, blocking and script writing.  You will work with other campers to make your very own movie, which you will take home on DVD! You will be sure to give this camp a “two thumbs up!”

Just Desserts

Rising first to third graders in the fall of 2008
Session 6         August 18 to August 22

Make your cake and eat it too! Don’t miss the chance to make incredible and edible desserts in this sweet camp.  Along with whipping up creative and delicious culinary masterpieces, you will learn about measuring, kitchen tools and cooking safety.  Get your sweet tooth ready!

Girl Power

Rising fifth to ninth graders in the fall of 2008.
Session 5         August 4 to August 15

This is a stimulating two week camp offered only to girls. Campers will explore different facets of being empowered through numerous activities. Participation in challenge course events such as the climbing wall, zip line and obstacle courses will promote both teamwork and self-confidence. Campers will also
utilize technological resources in order to better enhance their understanding of socio-cultural influences on girls and women. In addition, the critical examination of female media representations will help campers develop healthier body images. This dynamic camp will also include workplace field trips and guest appearances by positive women in the workforce. By exploring different career options, campers will widen their perceived window of job opportunities and choices for the future. Each camper will have the choice to
develop her own leadership style as their all take turns being “boss” for the day! Finally, all of the campers will work together to produce a final CD that chronicles their journey to becoming empowered.

Gourmet Around the World

Rising first to third graders in the fall of 2008
Session 7          August 25 to August 29

Take a culinary tour around the world. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to cook and eat delicious
food from places near and far. Each day we will make foods from a different country! Not only will you learn
basic cooking techniques while being exposed to new and different foods, you will also learn some of the
historical and cultural influences behind each of them.

Mind Benders

Rising fourth to sixth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 6         August 18 to August 22

It’s your move! Come learn how to use logic puzzles to strengthen your reading comprehension and problem solving skills in a challenging but fun environment. Analyze stories and follow their clues starting with the most obvious associations and then deduce the less obvious relationships until all of the pieces fit together like a fine puzzle. Build concentration and thinking skills with Sudoku and chess; complete baffling mind benders by working backwards and even upside down. Logic puzzles – they’re sure to make you think “outside the box.”
