Active Adventures

Get active, hone your skills and gain new ones in one of Congressional’s Athletic Camps!  Whether you’re looking to be on a court, on a river, or somewhere in between, you are sure to find an athletic adventure that’s right for you!  All athletic camps are coed.

Campers will remain with their specific athletic groups throughout the entire day.  They will have access to the pool, and, with the exception of Basketball Camp, lunches and snacks will be provided.  Campers in Basketball Camp must bring their own lunches- pizza and sodas are available at a minimal charge.

Badminton

Rising fourth to ninth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 1         June 16 to June 20

Learn the basic fundamentals of indoor badminton in our beautiful gymnasium. Emphasis on learning
individual skills, body movement and proper footwork will be taught as well as concepts, tactics, strategies,
history, rules, court etiquette and athletic psychology. Camp will begin each day with proper warm up
exercises. Instruction will include learning the proper techniques for all basic forehand and backhand strokes, drills on serves, clears, drops, drives, push, lifts, net shots and smashes. Supervised games will be featured.


Pony Adventure

Rising first to fourth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 1         June 16 to June 20
Session 6         August 18 to August 22

Have you ever wanted a pony?  Here is your chance to have a real pony experience without having to build a stable in your backyard.  The program will consist of learning about the care, feeding, grooming and needs of horses as well as plenty of supervised hand-led pony rides.  In addition to riding, you will learn about teamwork and the importance of safety when being around ponies.

EQUESTRIAN CAMP

Rising fifth to ninth graders in the fall of 2008

Session 3         July 7 to July 18
Session 4         July 21 to August 1
Session 5         August 4 to August 15

Campers will be taught Horsemanship from the ground up, including proper grooming, tacking and riding skills. Campers will be assessed as to their present levels of horsemanship at the beginning of the session. The levels include Beginner I, II, III, Intermediate I, II, III and Advanced I, II, III. Instructors will keep progress notes on students and be able to present evidence for advancements to next levels. Requirements for Equestrian Camp: long pants or jeans and a hard soled shoe with a heel, like boots- actual paddock boots would be ideal. No sneakers.

Ropes Adventure

With lawn events, low elements and a high ropes course this program provides campers with a unique opportunity for team building and gaining self confidence.  Our fully functional course includes two zip lines and a 40-foot, free standing 3 sided climbing wall with 6 different climbs.  You will go through a progression of initiatives ranging from simple to complex as you challenge each obstacle.  Staff will monitor the group’s progress by encouraging everyone to communicate and trust each other.  All activities are supervised by our well-trained staff, who will participate through demonstrations and individualized instruction.   

Cheerleading Camp

Rising third to sixth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 3         July 7 to July 18

Do you want to learn the cheerleading basics? This camp is a great introduction to motions, cheers, chants, dancing, and jumps.  Campers will work on individual skills and group dynamics in order to put on a camp-wide perfomance to show off their new-found abilities.  Well-trained staff members will help you master the essential fundamentals to becoming a cheerleader.  Make sure to bring your spirit!

Outdoor Adventures

Rising seventh to ninth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 4         July 21 to August 1

In Outdoor Adventures, you will learn a variety of skills necessary to backcountry life. You will be educated in the Leave No Trace philosophy, from learning how to build a Leave No Trace campfire right down to how to brush your teeth with minimum impact on the environment. You will learn how to set up several different shelters, from erecting a lean-to to pitching a tent.  You will also become a master of setting up a campsite, including everything from where to put a tent to how to hang a bear bag.  By the end of the session you will be proficient in basic navigation skills, such as using a compass and reading a map. Campfire cooking will also be an important component, and you will become familiar with preparing a variety of savory meals, using a Dutch oven and other cooking methods.

  

Congressional Basketball Camp

Rising third to ninth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 5         August 4 to August 15          

Welcome to the action-packed world of Basketball Camp!  This camp is an ideal, sport-specific program offering over 50 hours of instruction during the two-week session. 

The principle goal of Basketball Camp is to provide hands-on instruction in the fundamentals of basketball.  Under the direction of Coach Dan Prete, the enthusiastic and experienced coaching staff is committed to supporting and expanding each camper’s basketball skills and knowledge.  Many of the camp’s coaches and counselors are current Division I or II players. 

Through proper guidance, group interaction and instruction, each camper will discover his own strengths in basketball.  Campers will be grouped according to age and ability with an emphasis on the promotion of good sportsmanship and teamwork.  Campers must bring their own lunches.  Pizza and soda are available at a minimal charge.

Liquid Adventures Kayak School - Kayak Camp Level I

Rising seventh to ninth graders in the fall of 2008
Session 6          August 18 to August 22

Join Liquid Adventures Kayak School and try your hand at kayaking! You will hit the waters for an introductory sessionof rolling-on-the-river fun. Your week will begin with safety instruction, basic strokes and learning to roll. You will then progress to moving water on the Potomac at locations like Maryland Chute and Violette’s Lock.  The week culminates in a day trip to the Harpers Ferry area for a full day of river running fun.  Instruction in safety and basic skills are a part of every experience every day.  Be prepared to get wet and wild this summer. All instructors are ACA Whitewater Instructors, with Swift Water Rescue Training and CPR and Wilderness First Aid certification. Prerequisite- an open mind and ready to get wet and have fun
