The Athletics program at Congressional is designed to provide students with the opportunity to participate in a single sport in-depth each season. In accordance with Congressional's central beliefs, athletics is an integral component of the student athlete’s overall educational experience. All students are encouraged to participate in the athletic program. The goal of the Congressional Athletics program is to offer each student, regardless of ability, the opportunity to experience growth, accomplishment, have success at his or her own skill level, and provide wholesome opportunities for student-athletes to develop positive habits and attitudes. . We aim to keep our teams small, providing a good player-to-coach ratio and allowing for considerable playing time in games.
Congressional students learn the lifelong value of involvement in sports, the values of good sportsmanship, personal commitment, physical activity, teamwork, skill development, sacrifice, and decision-making. Interscholastic contests provide an opportunity for students, teachers, administrators, staff, parents and friends to gather and promote fair play, community, good sportsmanship and positive interaction.Participation on a team builds community spirit by providing an ideal arena for students to learn and understand the values of cooperation, sharing, teamwork, sportsmanship, motivation, responsibility, respect and discipline. Students learn what it means to work towards a common goal. Recognizing the intrinsic educational value inherent in sport, the athletics department gives every student the opportunity for team competition. To that end, Congressional Schools of Virginia makes every effort to provide appropriate team opportunities for students with a wide-range of athletic abilities willing to make the necessary personal commitment.
Congressional competes in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) in 13 interscholastic sports, which is comprised of ten independent schools in Maryland, Virginia, and the District. The CAC provides a safe and compatible level of competition among its members. School banners are awarded at the end of each season to top finishers in regular-season and tournament play. Congressional also competes against schools outside the CAC.
