Fine Arts

Enthusiasm for fine arts permeates every corner of our school.  At all grade levels our program emphasizes theory, appreciation, creativity and skill.  Often integrated with academic studies, fine arts are both a tool and a focus of learning at Congressional.  The winter and spring concerts, the choir and our annual art show in the spring are only a few of the creative outlets available to students.

Music
Congressional's age-sequenced music curriculum begins with our youngest Bright Beginnings students.  Specialized music instruction is provided twice a week through fourth grade, and every day for one trimester in Middle School.  Lower and Middle School students learn rhythm and elements of music theory in our music studio.  Throughout their education, students are introduced to music from other cultures and historic periods.  Children also perform on their own--in our annual musical production, in our after-school choir and in everyday singing.

Arts
Congressional's arts curriculum unleashes personal creativity and familiarizes students with great art through the ages.  Beginning with Senior Kindergarten, students take art as a specialty class, part of a coordinated curriculum that links basic theory with renowned artists and hands-on production.  Art also is coordinated with academics.  Subjects from dinosaurs to hieroglyphics to Medieval Europe are explored in projects.  Beginning in Lower School, students have access to our art studio, creating works in a wide variety of two and three-dimensional media, including weaving and clay.

Congressional's Fine Arts Program Continues to Grow

As area public schools announce cutbacks in funding for fine and performing arts programs in area county schools, Congressional's Fine and Performing Arts Program is growing.  This year students in Grades 5-8 will participate in a trimester study of speech and drama, a course that will include public speaking, broadcast journalism, debate and one-act plays and participation in many different aspects of the theater.
